Start with the real pallet and vehicle dimensions

Efficient pallet loading begins with the usable internal dimensions of the selected vehicle, not its advertised external size. Record the pallet length, width, height, unit weight, stackability and delivery stop. Then compare those inputs with the trailer floor, door access, wheel arches and the payload configured for the vehicle.

A standard Euro pallet is often 1,200 × 800 mm, but the actual footprint can change because of packaging, overhang or pallet condition. A small difference repeated across a full trailer can alter the row pattern and leave a gap that cannot accept the next pallet.

Choose orientation and loading order deliberately

Test both permitted orientations before committing to a pattern. Place large or inflexible footprints first, then use smaller compatible pallets in the remaining spaces. Loading order matters on multi-drop routes: cargo for an earlier stop must remain reachable without unloading unrelated pallets.

For an early floor-space estimate, compare the footprint with the trailer width using the LDM guide. LDM is useful for quoting and screening, but it does not prove that discrete pallets fit without gaps or access conflicts.

Review stacking, weight and axle balance

Stacking is only a capacity benefit when the lower pallet can support the upper one, the combined height fits and the handling method remains safe. Calculate total cargo weight including packaging and review where the heaviest pallets sit. A trailer can be below its total payload while still needing an axle-distribution review.

Use the pallet loading calculator for a quick capacity screen, then inspect the full arrangement in the 3D loading simulation. The result is a planning aid and does not replace the operator’s final securing, weighing or legal checks.

Pallet loading checklist

  • Confirm usable vehicle dimensions and access.
  • Separate footprints, weights and delivery stops.
  • Test orientation before changing vehicle size.
  • Keep fitted and unfitted pallets visible.
  • Recheck weight, balance and securing before dispatch.
